What you described is "manners", not etiquette by Dazed 2005-05-17 15:53:07
Etiquette is unchangable rules for a set situation - go visit the Queen if you want to try it yourself. :p

An example can probably explain the difference. I heard this one on CBC Radio many years ago so it is paraphrased but essentially accurate. The example: "Etiquette" around the Queen dictates that you eat meals in a certain order (appetizer, salad, soup, etc), you don't eat first, use utensils from out to in and top to bottom, use the soup spoon away from you, etc, etc. It is Following the Rules. "Manners," on the other hand, would be the Queen going into The Jungle, noticing people eat with their hands, and joining in. This makes them feel comfortable, demonstrates respect for them, etc, etc.

I firmly believe in manners, I think etiquette (for the sake of etiquette) is a waste of brain space and effort.
