That's what was said in my day in, I suppose, similar contexts. It is now often dismissed as an ignorant error since it should be "I couldn't car less", and it probably is an error when mindlessly repeated. But I remember when "couldn't" was standard and I believe that "could" was first used as a deliberate ironic reversal to punch up a tired insult.
At least "whatever" has the form of apparent acceptance, if not agreement, rather than being an open insult, but still youngins are so sensitive to being "dissed" nowadays, I'm surprised that's enough to avoid a fight. |
