I agree with your comments on the chocolate, soup, silverware, etc... but I figure that in most cases, these are bits of knowledge to be used as a tool, not for recreation. Like you, I prefer a cozy restaurant with simpler food (give me a good burger or a well-cooked hearty stew with thick slices of bread, or teriyaki chicken with stuffed potatoes if it is a little pricier) but if I want to get to that point in the ladder where I can use those skills, I gotta learn them at some point. Just another thing that could come in handy someday is how I look at it.
As far as the ambience goes, the closest I have been to that sort of situation was a formal military dinner (bow-ties et all) that did it's best to adhere to The Rules Of Good Eating (hehe) - while I wouldn't want to constantly eat meals in that environment, I don't mind it once in a while, and actually enjoy it. |
