As far as job/income go, I'm a software engineer with a diploma (equivalent to master's deg.) in computer science. Current income is somewhat less than you'd expect in that area because I'm still at university getting my doctor. That would also mean that sometime in the future (or even sooner, if I chose to drop uni and go into industry) I could easily find myself in a situation where those skills would be needed (if I wasn't careful avoiding exactly that).
As for "class status", I'd classify my upbringing as upper middle class. My parents did value all this etiquette stuff and I could probably handle myself quite okay, but I choose not to because I consider that kind of mannerism stupid.
As for the "small things" mentioned:
So the goal of "proper soup eating" is not to mess yourself up. No matter what direction I use a spoon in, I'm quite capable of achieving that (meaning: stupid rule. If you insist on one, use "Don't spill soup over yourself")
As for the chocolate: It's edible and probably tasty, so there's no good reason for not eating it (again, stupid rule).
The arrangement of silverware is a slightly different matter. It makes the life of the waiter/host easier by communicating your wishes regarding the next course etc. Therefore it's not stupid in itself. It gets stupid when people require you to know and give you looks for not doing so (because just telling the waiter "No thanks" works at least as well...)
Personally, I do not want to be able to eat in a 5-star restaurant, because I don't like the stiff ambienté and much prefer a nice, cozy small restaurant with somewhat more down-to-earth food. And I plan to avoid positions where people are judged for that kind of skill. For me that's even worth giving up the big bucks that supposedly come with it, because they don't weigh up the loss of life quality that (for me) comes with consorting in those circles. |
