talking then - the person I learned a lot of this from plays a mean game of pool, has competed at IPSC (pistol shooting comps) in the States, has worked as anything from a stockbroker to a company owner to a line cook, and is one of the best all-around people I know. I also haven't had any real problem with anyone else who has passed on tips to me, but yes, I can imagine a lot of higher-ups can have a bit of a 'holier-than-thou' attitude, just as a lot of the lower-downs can have it too.
