Oddly, etiquette is supposed to be about showing other people respect, making them feel welcome, and moderating how much someone else's behavior will turn your own stomach. Not belittling them and making them feel inadequate. It's not small-minded people who insist on upholding societal rules, but petty people use those rules to make other people feel bad about themselves.
