Interesting use of Techonlogy in farming. by techi870 2005-05-16 14:48:09
We stopped past TechisSO's Aunt&Uncle's farm a few weeks ago. While I was there I was looking at one of their tractors. I noticed that it had a GPS system in it.

On Saturday I got the chance to talk to TechisSO's cousin about the tractor. He told me that it makes huge difference in doing field work. You enter the dimension of the equipment you are using then head out to the field. Once you drive around the outside of the field a few time and make two passes at 90 deg through the middle of the field the unit calibrates itself for that field.

Once the unit is calibrated to the field it will give the driver a visual reference to follow. This virtually eliminates the need for the driver to keep looking behind him to make sure the equipment is lining up with the last row seeded/cut. TechisSO's cousin told me that he no longer gets neck cramps from driving the tractor.

Since the GPS system knows where it is to +/- 3" it will also save money for the farm. With out the system farms will usually overlap seeding passes by 8-12". By cutting that down it would save a decent amount of money when seeding multiple fields.
