Newsweek gets blood on it's hands in an effort by DesertRat662006-11-19 12:55:59
How do you know by Esteis 2005-05-16 12:34:23
it was "an effort to make the United States look bad"?

The source first mentioned the Qur'an desecration, and later (presumably after publishing) said that he wasn't sure it has happened; he did not say that it hadn't, and neither did the US government.

The fact that they trusted the source very much has to do with the reputation Guantanamo Bay has: other reports from Guantanamo Bay make this story quite believeable.

My point: they might have been rash in publishing the story (although that remains to be seen: it's currently unproven, disproven); but there is no reason to think they were trying to make the US look bad.
