If it is complicated enough that the user can't remember it, then social engineering is a lot harder. Also, if the user treats the password as a key (doesn't leave it lying around, etc) then the user can be certain noone has access to it, and would be aware if it was stolen or compromised.

Of course, users are nowhere near so security conscious.
