Online and offline? Online, most systems have a retry lockout policy. Offline, brute force attacks can go on for quite a while.

Let us assume you can test 1 million passwords/second (Correct order of magnitude for crypt/limited processors)
*does maths* we are talking hundreds of years here. Clearly, this can be reduced if you have massive computing power, but it still takes time - and most modern password systems should be stronger than crypt.
