Your 'for all practical purposes' is dependant on first past the post to justify.

You didn't need 1 vote to vote A in. A got in needing only 5/6 of your vote (say).

This is more evident when there's a wider margin. If a candidate wins by a huge margin, then let's say they only needed 1/4 of your vote.

The other 3/4 of your vote, in FPTP is wasted. You barely needed to be there at all. Your vote could have gone to someone else who almost equally represented you, person B.

Now person B might not get voted in at all, in FPTP because person C got slightly more votes than person B. But if person B was the second choice of EVERY ONE of those 3/4 votes wasted for person A, person B WOULD get in, and WOULD ALSO represent the population better.
