becuase if those secondary candidates for the party, don't get ranked #1 by other voters then they won't get elected. If every NDP supporter was to rank a single candidate as #1, and the rest as #2, then only a single NDP candidate would get elected, since they don't count the #2s unless the number 1 person was eliminated. So it's in there best interest to work together, yet also compete for publicity.
