Most parties will run a candidate for every seat, that's true. However You have to remeber that you only get 1 vote. So even if people vote straight down for a single party, only one of those candidates will get in.
Let's say there are 3 seats in the riding. IF I was to rank them
Liberal1 - 2
Liberal2 - 7
Liberal3 - 1
NDP1 - 3
NDP2 -
NDP3 -
GReen 1 - 4
GReen 2 - 6
Freedom 1 - 5
My vote goes for Liberal 3, and that is the only one of my vote that is counted. However if Liberal3 does not get enough votes to move onto the second round of counting, then my vote goes for Liberal1, if he doesn't move on then my vote counts for NDP1.
Only 1 vote for each ballot is counted, and there is a formula for more rounds of counting, untill only x people are left (each person must receive a certain percent to be counted for the next round).
It will obviously slow down counting, but not by too much, were only talking a few extra hours, so in the long term it doesn't matter.
THe fact that the politicans will be competing against there own party members for votes too, will help break party line.
Try the site out, it will explain it more then i could.
Vote on the site, see how your vote counts, and see how the MLAs are broken down... it's a better system in my opinion. |
