I run it for a/v work and run Kerio Personal firewall as my firewall. The former automatically updates both definitions and the application every morning, and the latter not only tells you when one program is launching another behind the scenes, but when *any* program tries to connect to your LAN or the WAN (internet).

For free software (both of them) they provide quite the secure solution for my needs (note that I am not connected directly to the web, but am behind one of those plastic-NAT-in-a-box things).
