Now I know why it's always been so important to me to speak precisely. I *detest* the usage imprecise language when it's clear that the speaker (or writer) can speak more precisely. And, although some people may use this adjuration (I think that's a first for me; I don't recall ever using that word before) to speak dogmatically, at least it will be certain that they believe what they say.
The last stanza suggests that the sort of diffident thinking decried by the poet is strongly related to the "Question Authority" zeitgeist. In particular, if one must question authority, and one wishes not to be questioned, all that is necessary is to fail to speak with authority. Perhaps the proponents of relativity and tolerance have as little desire to be questioned as those of dogmatism and absolutism - they simply use a different method to avoid questions. |
