If it's a 1996 or newer, all you'll need is to hook up the OBD-II scanner to it and pull down codes. Volvos were able to diagnose their own charging system after 1992 or so. I know mom's '94 960 was able to diagnose a voltage regulator fault by itself.

So, if the Service or Check Engine lights aren't on and it's post 1992 model year, it's likely the battery.
