Actually there are no ground wires in the typical car. The entire body and frame are used as ground so there are many cases where you will have just a single wire running to a component. Chances are that wire you left hanging is not a ground but a hot lead to something, and is shorting to the body and draining the battery. If you have a voltmeter or testlight try running it between the loose wire and the body. My guess is that you'll register current flow.
