HALP (auto mechanically adept needed) by unjust 2005-05-16 07:22:50
unjustSO's volvo is being uppity.

it needed a jump about 2 weeks ago, and then was fine for about a week. we thought it was the overhead lamp being left on.

i then repaired the tailgate electronics (wires were snapped to wiper, brake light, electronic lock, and defroster) although i left what i *think was the ground wire broken as i couldn't find any evidence of it outside of the hinges (where the wires were run) but everything runs fine in it.

we jumped it again saturday, and again sunday. i pulled it around back and poked around a bit.

with the car off, the only circuits that had current across them (in the fuse box) were the one with the clock and dome light, and the one with wipers and lights, although the wipers/lights circuit was 2-3V instead of the 12V that the clock circuit had (which i expected)

via the repair manual, i disconnected the battery leads, they were fine, reattached the + terminal and car off ran a volt meter across the -terminal and -cable. 12V. i started pulling fuses to turn off "always on" things like the clock, but 2/3 of the way down the fuse box unjustSO was getting testy about saying 12 every few moments and upset that car wasnt' working, so i gave up.

i left the - cable off the battery with plenty of starting charge on the battery so that she could reconect it and it'd start in the morning, figuring that if it was either a short or alternator issue the battery wouldnt drain. battery is dead today.

so i assume i need to get her a new battery, do i need to look for a short and get the alternator checked too? can that fry a battery and i'll just end up getting a new new one?
