Almost every German under the age of 55 speaks English. Whether or not they want to speak it with you is another matter entirely. Buy yourself one of those English < - > German language tourist books. Use it. In my experience many people (regardless of where you're at, I've done it in Japan, Thailand, France, and Italy) will switch to English for your benefit if they see you are making a serious effort. Just smile, don't get too frustrated, and enjoy yourself.
