Firefox and WindowBlinds don't mix. by jmaxsohmer 2005-05-11 22:39:51
One of my suitemates, who normally uses NetCaptor, has been forced to change browsers temporarily due to the webscript security holes found a few weeks back. He's trying to make Firefox work on his machine, but there are two problems.

1) Firefox doesn't really come with much in the way of helpful documentation - I've had to walk him through the stuff that they normally put in TFM or a ReadMe file. The same stuff that you guys helped walk me through back in February.

2) Firefox really doesn't like hacked-to-pieces Windows installs. Only the Windows GUI has been changed on my friend's computer - which shouldn't affect how programs execute - but Firefox doesn't handle complex tasks such as following links so well on his machine. Using the default extension installer tends to open a binary file within Firefox, and that's just one of many examples.

One of my other friends also uses a modified Windows install - he has to download the nightly build every night just to keep Firefox running.

As a Software Engineering major, I have to say that I find the lack of included documentation and the extremely poor organization (also, I do agree with my suitemate that the default settings for Firefox are awful) absolutely appalling - it's something I never really noticed before because I had a bit of advice before I started installing and configuring Firefox.

I love Firefox as a browser once it's configured to my liking, but right now, in this context, I have to say that it's not a universal solution to Internet Explorer.

I'm not saying that the concept behind Firefox is poor, nor am I saying that it isn't a good browser. I just think that, based on what I've just witnessed, it's got some serious problems in the foundation.
