There is a right way to do things, and a wrong way. When you are young, you try the wrong way first (due to young thinking), then learn the right way through these types of incidents.
I have been explaining to my 16 yr old the same type of thing, timing is everything...before opening mouth for anything (be it a heavy decision as yours, or a comment on someone's shoes), think of how you would feel if you were in the other person's shoes. You will know the right way to approach things everytime.
Kudos on the big decision, but also learn from the reactions you received, and remember to deliver your information in a different way.
For the older folk that do not have teenage girls, believe it or not, this particular generation has grown up with this way of handling things....and I am not sure where from. Most all break up with their boyfriends by having a best friend do it....(no matter how many times I have gone on and on about it not being the right way to handle it...)
Again, I am glad you have made a decision and to stick with it, but really, in the adult world, you have to follow the right way, and handle the close people first, then move out from there. It's only fair to everyone, and to yourself, and will not get people so riled up!
