Question about soccer moms: by Esteis2005-05-11 14:52:03

"Soccer mom" is a term much older than the last US election -- I remember it from the early 1980's (I think Erma Bombeck may have coined the phrase originally). Its connotations have shifted and changed over the past two decades but, at its root, the image is always one of a suburban mom, often hectic, taxiing her kids to and from their various after-school sports programs and screaming from the stands like a maniac to support her offspring on the playing field. Her first vehicle was a station wagon, but it became an SUV in the nineties when such vehicles gained tremendously in popularity.
