Up to this point, each state issues its own ID, each state uses its own format: some use barcodes, some use PDF417 2D codes, some use magstripes, some have no electronically readable information at all. Now, the government will force them to become uniform. Something that, hopefully, is found unconstitutional in court.
In most states, you're still not required to carry ID when simply walking around. Most vagrancy laws require you to have at least $5 cash on your person or positive ID.
(Granted, you need to carry your license and proof of insurance while driving, but that's different.) |
