An ID must be not only exceedingly difficult to fake, BUT it's got to be very easy to spot fakes. And therein lies the problem. Once an ID becomes accepted, it will be faked. And the more places are required to check it, the more valuable such a fake will be and the more people will fake it. And many of those places will be unable or unwilling to check sufficiently well to detect some of these fakes. So you end up with the same problem, only this time the guvment have one heck of a lot of information about you and other upstanding citizens - and in one place, making it much easier to search!
