it is a single wave of energy, and the blade length is the amplitude of the wave. This also shows why the power cells last so long - they have almost 100% power return when activated. The only time they lose any power is when they are actively cutting something or when in contact with another lightsaber. I may be wrong, but the explanation made sense to me.
