Annoying WebHosts by MikeCDN 2005-05-09 15:34:53
Bloody Lunar Pages.

I've been working on some new scripts for a program I'm making. On Thurday I was doing database access, loops, experimenting on some things.

At one point I created an infinite loop or two, so i hit cancel on the browser, tried again figuring that the thing was just being weird, then went to the script, found the problem, fixed it, ran it again. Looking at the database, I relized that the original 2 scripts were still running... oops... So I drop the database table, and start using a different one.

When I get home from work, I notice that the server is using older versions of my scripts. I just shrug and figure that they must have had to change something. I also notice that there is now a 30 second timeout on php, (I up that to a minute on one script to make it work properally).

Over the weekend I notice that the server seems less responsive, and my emails aren't worknig properally.

This morning I mail them to ask them what's up with my email, and I get told that it probally has something to do with the server move. I'm like "huh?", I get forwarded a 'digest' containing an trouble ticket that a server admin had made to me, but never actually sent to me (or maybe sent to my emails which no longer work).

Hi,

Your account is utilizing excessive resources, causing a significant degradation of services on the server Leo. This is a shared environment and we can not allow one user to utilize the majority of the resources on a server as it affects all users adversely. Because of this, you have been temporarily moved to the Quantz server. A detail of the problem is shown below:

Average %CPU usage - 14.58
Average %Memory usage - 0.36
Average %MySQL usage - 0.1
Top Process%CPU 87.2/usr/bin/php
Top Process%CPU 86.9/usr/bin/php
Top Process%CPU 86.1/usr/bin/php

We moved you to Quantz first to solve the issue of the degraded service on Leo and second as a courtesy in order to prevent any downtime on your site to allow you time to rectify the situation. Currently, your site is not suitable for a shared hosting environment.

Quantz is not a production server and is not guaranteed to run in the same manner as your old server nor will it support all functions you may have. This is a transitional server only and is not intended to be a permanent placement. Please make a decision on how you would like to proceed within seven (7) days. After seven (7) days, your account will be suspended if no other arrangements are made.
They then offer me suggestions about what to do 1) Upgrade to Enterprise plan, but that still isn't suitable, 2) Upgrade to Dedicated Server (at $100 a month), or
3. You may take steps to correct the problem. This must be done before the seven (7) days are up. You will need to let the technician know the steps you took to correct the issue and get approval before being returned to a production server.

The range to get usage into an acceptable area would be 10% or less top processes with under 1% average CPU.
Okay... my steps are that I fixed the scripts even before you moved me to the server, then put my account into a 7 day to suspension count down WITHOUT TELLING ME. Also I don't belive there was anything about CPU utilization in anything that I signed.

Oh and step #4 was suggesting I look elsewhere but reminding me it will take up to 72 hours to update the DNS.

After further inquiring I found out that the timeout on my old server was 960 seconds. 960 secnods on a PHP script? What it gods name would anyone ever use that for? From the timestamp of the problem it was right when I was having those issues infinite loop issues. They made no attempt to wait and see if it resolved, they just moved me, no warning, becuase I was using too many resources for a 20 minute period.

Anyone know any good webhosts, preferably canadian? I think I'm going to jump ship when my contract is due (June 10th)
