I went all over Europe with a gerber on my belt. I just used to take it off and put it in my cabin baggage on my way to the metal detector. Didn't think much of it at the time, but in retrospect the guys watching the X-ray machine must have been pretty useless not to spot it. I suppose they were watching for pistols, as until 2001 the idea of someone trying to hijack a plane with just a knife sounded pretty unlikely.
The gerber still lives on my belt all the time, but it goes in the hold baggage when I fly.
