I got 2 bites - both on the right wrist. One was on the thumb side (still an itchy bump after more than 20 years!) and the other was on the little finger side. This was Saturday morning. By Saturday afternoon, these had swelled up to about 2" or more from the bite site - about a half-inch thick so I went to the hospital on Sunday morning. They gave me Benadril and sent me home with instructions to come back on Monday if it got worse. --

It did.

By the time I got back to the hospital on Monday morning, I was swollen up from just beyond my second knuckles to just below my elbow. My wrist was twice its normal size. I couldn't even close my hand into a fist - nor touch any finger to my thumb - it just wouldn't go it was so swollen. I usually describe it as being tight - like a sausage.

It wasn't particularly painful (I've been hurt MUCH worse), but it was very disturbing - especially since the underside of my arm was an alarming red color.

Well, they stuck an IV in the back of the other hand (not as painful as it seems) and started pumping me full of antibiotics (which WAS painful - it burnt going in). By late Tuesday, the swelling was starting to go down and the redness was fading so they let me out on Wednesday morning so I could leave on a planned trip. The swelling finally went away about a week later. That was when they decided I should carry around an Epi Kit.

Needless to say I watch what insects are around when I'm outside.
