Those go to the frequent flyers or people who booked their seat a couple of months ago. Some airlines even charge extra for them.

I always try and go for an asile seat in the middle. I like to get up and walk around a lot during the flight and that's a lot easier if you don't have to get past anyone. The reason for being in the centre section is that 747s at least are normally 3-4-3 in cattle class which means the window rows have two people you have to get up for, the centre only has one.
