Make sure you put everything you easily can through the x-ray. I've taken to just automatically putting my shoes (metal eyelets) and belt through together with keys, change, coat, metalic chewing gum wrappers... If they have the metal detector set to a sensative level they are enough extra over things lkie glasses, zips etc. to set it off.

Once the detector has gone off they are supposed to give you the whole pat down and scan with the wand junk which is just a waste of time. It's so much easier to just make sure you don't set it off to start with.

Oh and no screwdrivers or similar tools in the hand luggage.

Other than that I've not had any problems with security although I did get a few odd looks flying transatlantic with just hand luggage.
