If seating is not assigned on your ticet, get there early and get a seat on an emergency exit row. You get extra leg room (assuming you think that you can easily get the door open and out of the plane before a bunch of panicked idiots try to crush you).

Also, try to avoid seats just in front of an emergency row and up agaisnt the back bulkhead since they generally don't recline. The seat in the front, against the front bulkhead does not have any "under the seat" stowage.

As far as security, remember they are just there to keep some other idiot from bringing a weapon on the plane and killing you. They are usually too busy to care what you're wearing. I don't know about British airports, but in the US, never leave your carry on unattended, it'll get picked up by security and you won't see it again.
