I suspect there's more than enough usages people have put 'pounds' to that I can't find (by googling just 'pounds') that implicitly refer to mass.

Sorry, I don't buy it. People regularly confuse 'mass' and 'weight' regardless of units (and have done so in my presence over the years). Imperial notwithstanding.
