not to notice a superficial difference between people? Trying to lure them into denial makes them -later on- a possible target for all kinds of "divide et impera" tactics. Most of those are NOT to the benefit of society.
But a kid that KNOWS that people are different, yet doesn't make "problems" out of the differences, will be for-armed.
Maybe only a bit, but it WILL have encountered "different" people who siled at hir, who stepped just that little bit slower or faster to "give way" (yes, to avoid her running her wiggly-wobbly-bike into their legs, but SHE sees people who are "polite to children")
And then, turning 16, she WILLhave these memories to fallback to: "YES they look different, but first of all, they are people like you and me"
