About a year-year and a half ago one of our members showed up to the range and found that someone had crawled through the fence and was using the range. The member confronted the non-member about being there. The non-member then showed him a doctored membership card(date had been changed). The non-member finally admitted that he didn't feel that he should have to pay as he only came out 1-2 time a year (our membership fee is $35.00/year). The member told them to leave and a argument broke out. The member finally decided to leave but as he was leaving the non-member made a comment about what he could do to the members family. The member then "lost in" (his words) and got in a scuffle with the non-member. Punches were thrown but non of them actually landed anywhere. Member finally leaves but just goes home. The non-member went straight to the police and reported the member for assault. After spending $1200.00 on legal fees the member has the charges thrown out. Fast forward to our last Directors meeting. One of the non-directors (maintance coordinator) that was there made a motion that the club should reimburse the member for his legal costs. We told him that we couldn't make that decision at the directors meeting and it would have to wait for a general meeting. I didn't voice my opinion then but if it comes up at the general meeting I'll let them know what I think. The guy admitted he "lost it" when the other guy commented about his family. The guy should have just called/gone to the police when he discovered the non-member trespassing. I'm going to let the club know that if they actually decided to pay the guy (which I don't think will happen) they will be looking for a new Treasurer because I'll resign before we pay for the guys legal bill. So am I being resonable with my thoughts here?
