| A little theory on Opera vs. Firefox. |
by Ravenlock |

There's this thread going on over at digg.com, about how the next version of Firefox is going to use cache more intelligently to make going back and forward much faster in the FF browser (one of the things Opera still does undeniably much better).
Somebody predictably chimed in with "you mean what Opera's been doing for years?", but for some reason it got me thinking. As Lionsphil would attest (:-p), Opera has been doing this for years, and still does it better than FF. Opera is an excellent browser, and aside from a few annoying quirks with websites I use, there's no reason to pick FF over it. FF eats more RAM with lots of pages open, FF can be a pain to upgrade, etc etc. So why do I love Firefox?
The conclusion I came to is that Opera is a great browser, but Firefox excites me. Firefox is free, developed by people who love the philosophy behind a proper browser being free, and extendable to the practical limits of one's imagination. It gets people excited about the idea that people working together can create something great - something they want other people to build on - and not for the money.
Opera is a great browser, but I just don't feel as happy when I'm using it. So is that a stupid reason? The floor is open for discussion. (Actually, I have to sleep soon so I can work tomorrow, but I'll check for replies before rollover.) ;-) |
