Incidentally, Lithium Ion batteries (like most chemistries) are very stable during discharge.

The only time they've been known to explode is during charging - and they can "Vent with flame" as it's (somewhat understatedly) known.
Somewhere there's a sequence of photos of a LiIon cell going up due to overcharge - can't remember where, but it's considerably more spectacular than NiCads venting.

I've seen NiCads go up in person - lots of foul-smelling smoke and heat, but nothing much else. We carried the packs outside and dumped them under a rock in case they vented in a spray, but they weren't too dangerous.
