| Suppose one day we (the people of the United States of America) elect as our President a woman who is a practicing muslim, and faithfully follows (as some sects do) the strict dress code of covering all her exposed skin from head to foot when in public. According to your reasoning, since this is a religious practice, she may not dress this way when performing official duties of her office as this is an expression of preference for a particular set of religious beliefs, and as president she would not be allowed to practice religion when acting in her official capacity as POTUS. Her religion does not allow her to dress differently.
How do you resolve this?
(Before you say this is a far fetched story, think about the Jewish tradition of wearing a Yarmulka, of the dress of some Orthodox Jews (Hasidic sects come to mind).) |
