What happens (and it happens often) is that someone develops a cancer that we just don't yet know how to treat effectively. (A diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, for instance, is very bad news.) When people are told by the best doctors available that their cancer is incurable by current scientific medicine, rather than resign themselves to the fact that they are mortal, they start to grasp at straws (naturally enough, I suppose).
Third world countries offer treatments that you can't get in Canada or the US. There is generally a good reason why the gov't hasn't approved them: they either don't work or the cure kills as well. Every year Canadians and Americans go to Mexico or the Phillipines to undergo quack cures. It's a tragedy, but the desperate will go to any lengths for a cure. |
