...at least the huge buildings and the bureaucracy and the dismalness of it all, which struck me as very Adams, the slapstick *WHAP* struck me as being not very Adams-esque at all. Just a cheap laugh, and not a very good one.
The biggest problem I had was that they castrated the witty dialogue and philosophical ramblings of Adams when they didn't even have to. There were many of the background and book speeches that could have held true to Adams' writing without extending the time needed, or when needing a few extra seconds, overlapping a lot of scenic shots.
The alterations were _not_ as witty. They did not save time. They were just changed for the sake of being changed.
I think the director failed to notice that it wasn't so much the plot that made the books, because the plot is insane, improbable, and random. It's about intelligent dialogue and wit.
There _is_ a middle ground between a guy reading the book on screen, and completely missing the point.
And I don't think the director found that line.
I moderately enjoyed it. But it was by no means a masterful attempt.
