What it boils down to is that instead of voting for a single party and a single MP, you have a single party vote, but you can rank MPs in order of preference. Thus, your vote is practically never wasted. If only the US would implement that for presidential elections (hah!), they might just see a chance of something other than only democrat or republican presidents.
