It's just sprouted and then dried barley. Even as an extract it's not too bad. Mostly sweet. I like to munch on it while brewing. What's the weird taste like? Bitter, sweet, turpentine, plastic, banana? If it's not in Newcastle I'd guess your tasting the bitter hops or maybe the yeast. Which ales?
