Scottish Youth Hostel Association Hostels do not have an age limit, and are quite reasonably priced. They're generally under 20 pounds a night.
As for sights, I'd say go to at least one distillery. It's kind of neat to see how Scotch is made, and if you like it, some places will reimburse part of the cost of your tour/tasting in their gift shop. Highly recommended.
The Firth of Forth rail bridge (Edinburgh) is an awesome sight, but owing to the weather, you may not see it in its full glory. Also, they were painting it when I was there last year, so parts were under tarps.
Aside from those two things, I'd suggest going around the country and enjoying the view. Most of the "A" roads through the country are 2 lane, and if you have a car, a lot of them are scenic. Otherwise, you might try inter-city bus routes. There are a lot more in Scotland than in the US. Also, if you can, hike. Near the Loch Lomond area (very nice hostel, by the way), there are some nice trails that you could take from the southern end of the lake, up to the ferry midway up the lake, and catch a bus back to the hostel. I don't have the details, but the Lonely Planet walking guide to Scotland is pretty good about info like that. |
