Joe Haldeman (my fave number one super good SF author) wrote a truly excellent Star Trek novel called Planet of Judgement. Within it he has Kirk musing over rumours that he and Spock are lovers. Kirk opines (and I paraphrase): "I don't object to the rumour that Spock and I are lovers because Spock is male or my first officer; rather, I object to the idea that I'd be stupid enough to take a lover who only gets into the mood once every seven years."
