Why is my new hard drive so slow? by Egaeus 2006-11-19 12:55:59
I have two hard drives in my machine. Both are Seagate Barracudas. One is several years old, and is this 40GB drive. The other is a few months old, and is this 160GB drive. They are both on the same IDE channel (160 master, 40 slave), and DMA mode 5 is enabled on both.

Windows has slowed down considerably since I bought the new drive. I first atrributed it to the image being from the old drive (it was acting shonky and I got worried), and Windows not liking the change in drive geometry. However, a fresh repartition and reinstall hasn't changed anything. In Sandra, the Drive Index for the 40GB drive is 34MBps, which is about right. The 160 one clocks in a a whopping 2684kBps. That's so slow it's incredible. Any ideas what might be causing this?
