RPG Character Death Stories Thread: by RetiQlum22005-05-04 14:56:26
My group, which consisted of 2 fighters, by Wolfenone 2005-05-04 15:11:47
a wizard, and myself - a dwarven cleric, had been fighting a young green dragon in a badly-lit, sloping cavern half-filled with water. a few feet after the water started there was an unseen (at the time) dropoff (a few feet). As soon as I had seen the water, I cast water-breathing on the party. During the fight, my dwarf slipped and fell down the shelf, not knowing it was there. After a few rounds of trying to climb up the VERY slippery shelf, I was finally successful. The dragon was winning the fight pretty much at this point, having taken out one of the fighters, and the wizard was out of spells. My dwarf dramatically burst through the surface of the water and cast flamestrike on the dragon. This brought it down to exactly 0 HP, which means that it had a choice under D&D 3.5 rules - use an attack action, and start bleeding out; limp away at half speed while we attacked it; or heal itself somehow. As it had no healing spells, it chose to use its attack. Of course this was its breath weapon, of which my dwarf took the full brunt. It killed my dwarf right on the spot, but killed itself in the process. I still consider that my most dramatic character death.
