Drunks just add another high to the mix, all too often. Abuse victims self-medicate to forget / avoid the experience. In each case, that could be considered a gateway. My experience is - if they want the escape, the drugs will happen. he only resolution is to have happy, well-adjusted people to whom nothing bad ever happens. So. If it is inevitable, work on harm reduction and options for recovery, not on hammering people when they are down. Making them criminals only makes for more crime.
