Okay, so I got a new job. Rather nice, actually. Been here a few weeks, already been to a couple conferences... Really like it.
I have two titles, Database Administrator and Internet Programmer (aka Web Master). Pay is good, I have my own cozy office, big desk, leather chair. Two brand-new computers. I'm listed, naturally, in the corporate phone directory as an IT Administrator. All is well within that realm.
Of course, I interviewed for, and recieved, the positions listed above. I envision a sweet Web server at my command, a trusty SQL database server (most likely MS SQL, but the pay is good), etc. What do I actually find?
First off, the Web design here is handed off to some high school senior. He claims to be an experienced ASP programmer, but lacks any real world experience and from my dealings with him I would say he's never worked on anything past a simple form mail or guest book script. So, ok, I can deal with that. They pay me as Web Master, but I don't actually do it. I just hate that my name is in any way attached to the crap generated with what appears to be FrontPage.
At least I'm still the database administrator. Yeah... I was expecting like SQL Server 7.0 or something. Which we have (but I don't have access to, as it's used for the Web scripts only; EVEN THOUGH I'M THE BLOODY WEB MASTER!!!!). But the database in question is, get this: Access 2.0. That's right! It's a friggin' custom app written in Access 2.0 to track program enrollment and whatnot.
*sigh* So of course all the mundane tasks I would have I have automated with VB. So, what do I do all day? I watch the UF boards, read The Reg, listen to some streaming radio stations... I actually toy around with some experimental Web design techniques... Mostly I just sit in my office, all alone.
At least the pay is good. But still, I feel a little mislead as to the original job posting and the information gathered in interview... But hell, I'll take thier money, I guess. It'll hold me over while I start my own business... |
