People aren't going to shop at a place merely because it treats its workers right. There has to be an acceptable price and good merchandise.
...if there WAS a Costco in the area, I'd shop there. As it is, I have a Sam's Club membership from w*rk. That Costco pays a living wage AND has quality merchandise at good price is a happy coincidence. If it was Walmart supplying low cost healthy food and Costco giving you bulk prices on potato chips, few of the clientele would care.
There is a local grocery chain here that does treat its workers decently (fully paid benefits, better wage, etc). They charge a little higher than the big box, but their stuff is quality, the store is beautiful, and there is hardly any wait at the checkout. Needless to say it is packed every evening after work. You have to offer value to the customer, (combo of price AND service) or they won't shop there.
And that's cold reality. |
