MikeCDN seems to have a fairly good grasp of the core reality of the prospect, whereas you seem to be living in a fantasy land where unions are always a good thing... Where that's really far from the truth. One of the things unions mostly go for is wage increases, which as others mentions raises costs to the store, so they either have to raise prices, or fire a bunch of people as they can no longer afford to keep them. Finding a solution to the problem at hand is quite a complicated thing that does end up in a bit of a vicious circle
