I have VOIP, and my computer has nothing... by LongFist 2006-11-19 12:55:59
...to do with it.  The telephone circuit is included in the Cable Modem.  As a result, I've got connectivity separate from telephony, allowing me to start/stop my computer systems whenever I want.  Embedded technology is incredible, and the best part: I called up my local bell company, listed their shortcomings for the last six months (quite a list, actually), wherein their answer was almost always "who you gonna' call?", and Fired them!

It's a great feeling, and one I would highly recommend to anyone.  I've been on VOIP for a little unnder a year: only two outages, and each was less that half-an-hour.  As a bonus: I could see the outage at the router, and didn't have to wonder if I was being "accidentally" disconnected again at the neighborhood switchbox (average time: 3+ hours while awaiting a truck to go see what they might have crossed up in there...)

As a result, I preach the best of VOIP any- and every-where I can.  One of these days, the bell companies are going to realize that there is competition, and that service means more than bull-cow' stuff...
